Here's The Moment Daniel Cormier Learned The Jon Jones Fight Was Off
Wednesday night, we all learned that the UFC 200 main event, a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, was off because Jones had failed a drug test. Less than an hour before the news broke widely, Cormier had to be told.
UFC’s Embedded show captured the moment, in the bowels of the MGM Grand Garden Arena, when Dana White informed Cormier than Jones had pissed hot. (The video above should be cued up; if not go to 4:15.) Cormier was frustrated, disappointed, offering to sign a release to fight Jones anyway, because at the moment, he didn’t know if he’d be able to fight at all.
We now know this one has a semi-happy ending for Cormier (pending the direction and duration of the face-punching); he’ll get Anderson Silva. It won’t be a title match, and it won’t be the main event—it’s now third from the top, with Tate-Nunes getting the spot—but Cormier will still get himself paid, and if his contract includes a PPV cut, the card is strong and deep enough that it should still be significant. Oh, and Cormier’s more likely to win this one without too much trouble.
