This is the stupidest deal I've heard of since the Islanders signed Yashin for 10 years and $90MM a few years ago after trading Jason Spezza and Zdeno Chara to get him. Whoever said above that the Islanders could have two superstars right now instead of one mid tier goalie should amend it to four superstars, no stupid contracts and no Alexei Yashin. Comparisons to the Knicks would be more apt if the Knicks had traded away Lebron, Kobe, Dwyane Wade and some other really good basketball player who I've never heard of because I'm Canadian.

Will, for the love of god, please stop linking to that guy at hockeybuzz. The guy just makes stuff up. TSN has a quote from the NHL Deputy Commissioner saying that teams are allowed to do what teams are allowed to do - some decisions work well, others don't and we'll see how this turns out. It's happening.

SimKyle, also, before Luongo they let Tommy Salo go so they could bring in the future with Eric Fichaud. That seemed to go well...the one good thing about trading Luongo was that I was then able to buy his Panther's jersey and still keep a little of my pride. People forget that when DiPietro was drafted, they had Roberto Luongo in their system. Drafted second overall was Dany Heatley. The Isles, who have a considerable lack of star power as it is, could have had two franchise guys playing right now.

Instead, they have a mid-upper tier goalie for the next 15 years.

Rob Babcock wouldn't have made that trade.

Aside from the obvious fact that this deal is wacky and outlandish, its actually not that bad. $4.5 million a year is a bit high in the "new" NHL for an upper 1/3 goalie, but in 10 years it might be a bargain. Then again, in ten years Rick might have suffered some gruesome groin injury and be out of hockey.
