What makes a hero? Is a man born to be remembered through the ages, or is greatness thrust upon him whether he desires it or not? History may little note nor long remember the fight between Florida International and the University of Miami. But we shall never forget the valiant sacrifices of Ned, who threw himself into the fray despite being hobbled by serious injury.
We mentioned it yesterday, but it bears repeating as Veterans Day draws ever closer ... no nation becomes great without individual great deeds. Let us never forget.
More tribute, after the jump.
The Return Of Ned [Deadspin]

Now I wanna go watch 'Saving Private Ryan' again. Was that Ned carrying his blown off hand?
Should have stopped at Normandy...that's some fine photoshopping.
FUBAR, sir....FUBAR.
I keep envisioning Ned with a bullet through his forehead. Put your helmet on dude.
Ned can't swim!
"Scrooge was better than his word. He did it all, and infinitely more; and to Tiny Tim, who did not die, he was a second father."
God bless us, every one!
Photoshop 1? Great, better than Vick at McDonald's. Photoshops 2-4? Not so great.
Ned's gonna smash that huge ass Pringle!
Nah, I got nothin'...
Freedom isnt free.
Ned in Normandy at the very least should make the Hall of Fame ballot
Too bad they didnt get all of that other crutch in the original photo
I'm guessing this is the last time I'll equate "The Greatest Generation" with "FIU Football."
I think Ned's crutches have little propellers on the ends of them.
sticky bomb time!
You mean, MMP, you don't even want to mention how Ned tried to help this guy?
I think I saw Ned in the tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings...
wow, what a terrific audience, very much
So Ned's the park curator in Jurrasic Park 5?
I'm not photoshop-literate, but if possible, can someone make a photoshop of Ned staring down Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania 3?
Peter King is disgusted by you making a mockery of our men and women in the armed services.
Ned was part of the "Dirty Dozen" right? Lee Marvin was a bad ass.
Remember the scene in Saving Pvt Ryan when Sgt Horvath, out of bullets, throws his helmet at a kraut?
I can see Ned attacking a German Panther/tiger with his crutches...
I'm not photoshop-literate, but if possible, can someone make a photoshop of Ned staring down Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania 3?
I was hoping for one of Ned entering the cripple fight between Timmy and Jimmy
I believe it was actually Ned who helped raise the flag at Iwo Jima.
Sir Hotbod,
Jimmy & Timmy do not recognize Ned as a true Crip
Jean Shorts Rule!
"Players of FIU, I ask you once more rise and be worthy of this historical hour!"
My grampy used to tell me stories about how Ned stormed Omaha beach...very slowly...
I remember when Ned stared down that tank at Tiananmen Square. Nothing scares him, that's for sure.
"A hero kills people, people that wish him harm. A hero is part human and part supernatural. A hero is born out of a childhood trauma or out of a disaster and must be avenged."
Clearly, Ned is our hero.
Neds my hero
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And A'Mod Ned Day shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of FIU Panthers.
We all have a Ned in our heart, metschick.
History's Greatest Figures are recognized by a one-word name...
Does anyone know where I can get that Mitchell & Ness Ned throwback Jersey?
Neds only regret was that he had but one crutch to give for his country
Ned...I'm here to tell you your brothers were killed in combat. They're dead.
Which one, sir?
All of them.
Shouldn't all of the other soldier be standing behind Ned at Normandy? Or did they not have Operation: Get Behind the Darkies yet?
For want of a crutch Ned was lost.
For want of Ned the fight was lost.
For want of a fight the OB was lost.
For want of OB the game was lost.
And all for the want of a crutch.
forgive me, for i don't have photoshop at work, but i believe this picture was snapped over the weekend...
Spin-off in the making - Nedspin?
Ned's dead, baby, Ned's dead.
Ned was a good bowler and a good man. He was...he was one of us. And he was an avid football brawler, and a good friend. In your wisdom, you took him lord, as you took so many bright flowering men at Khe San, Lan Doc, and Hill 364...
Dennis, i believe the politically correct term is "Operation Cannon Fodder"
Dweeze is awesome.
I remember from my history class that at Kitty Hawk in 1903, Ned flew the Wright Brothers' plane fifteen miles on a thimble of corn oil. Single handedly won us the Civil War, it did.
Their's not to make reply,
Their's not to reason why,
Their's but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
hopped Ned.
It's too bad we don't have a shot of Ned providing relief in New Orleans? Or taking down the Berlin Wall?
Thanks Glassman, now I have the 'Ned is dead, that's what I said' song in my head. This isn't going to be good.
One time I had that song in my head at basketball practice. I was smoking like Earl the Pearl Monroe all afternoon...
One does not simply crutch into Mordor...
Someday we might look back on this and decide that saving RB, A'Mod Ned was the one decent thing we were able to pull out of this whole godawful, shitty internet.
+10xp Barstoolio
We shall fight on the beaches, especially South Beach, we shall fight in the clubs, we shall fight in the alleys and in the streets, we shall fight in the motherfucking OB; we shall never surrender.
A'Mod Ned, Half-time, FIU at Miami, October 14, 2006
American Hero
Ned was also there for Apollo 11.
I'm telling you, there's a reason why that famous photograph only has 1 footprint.
